There are other fields where useful biological observations are patented and then licensed to many businesses to apply in many products. The leaves of the lotus plant stay clean despite its muddy environment. Looking closely, Professor Wilhelm Barthlott at the University of Bonn, Germany, found that the structure of the leaves and their chemistry helped make dirt and water bead up and roll off. Barthlott patented this phenomenon and licenses it to others. Janine Benyus, founder of the Biomimicry Guild, describes the variety of companies using the lotus effect: Ferro Corporation of Cleveland, Ohio, uses it in coatings applied to glass to keep water and dirt off, and prevent fogging; paints called StoCoat Lotusan were developed by Sto-Corporation of Atlanta, Georgia; Erlus in Denmark has produced Erlus Lotus self-cleaning roofing tiles.

The venture capital firm Khosla Ventures is investing in a Pax Scientific spin-off company called Pax Streamline that will work on developing high-efficiency systems for heating and cooling, turbines, and other industrial uses.
